Happy trails, Frank Schleck. You’re a free agent. 

While Andre Greipel was getting his first Tour stage of 2013, Frank Schleck was finally getting his walking papers from RadioShack. The outfit, which will be TREK in 2014 and under that company’s ownership, let Schleck go one year after a positive drugs test at the Tour.

Schleck’s departure from the squad has long been speculated, though certain riders within the team had downplayed the likelihood of his firing. In particular, Andy Schleck seemed positive TREK would keep Frank around, even as the team seems to be focusing its squad and efforts behind Classics star Fabian Cancellara.

Schleck’s one year ban ends later this month, and he’ll be allowed to race immediately upon its conclusion.

With Frank’s future with the team now over, Andy Schleck’s interest in staying may wane. Both riders were rumored to be leaving at the end of the season, though that speculation is almost annual with the pair. Andy has stated his interest in remaining with the squad, but has made previous remarks that he would only ride on the same squad as his brother.

Other teams will be interested in the elder Schleck, though no offers could be made public until his contract was officially terminated. He would be eligible to race the rest of the year, including the Vuelta a Espana at the end of August.
