Wakeley, Liegl and Dominic emerge as series front runners.
Unmatched in the race and now with a healthy lead in the points series, Jorden Wakeley will need only to score points to stay in the lead in the final two races of the Series.
Sunday’s Northmen Cross was a smashing success, perhaps that much more for the points contenders. Wakeley, Bobbie Liegl and Tina Dominic all took big points hauls and moved well ahead of much of the field. With the top three races counting toward the final count, any time a rider takes first or second, they’re looking good for the final count. Wakeley will need just one more win to be unbeatable, unless Kim Chapman can come back and take the final two races. All is not lost, however, for an improving Chelsea Strate already on form to take third at Northmen Cross. She’ll be on hand at the final two races and could move well up the standings.
While most likely out of the running for the overall win, a lot of riders are looking to finish high. Bennett Paul, Jacob Ellis, and Stacy Smith are in great positions to move into the top five, especially if they all continue to race A for top points. Ellis has made his intentions clear, riding B as a warm up and testing his legs in the As against some of the best ‘cross riders in the state. Paul, Ellis, and the young guns from NCCS may feature in the Elite races for the rest of the season, and with good reason.
NCCS’s best hopes may lie with Trever Kingsbury. After high placings Breezeway and a B win at Northmen, he’s expected to race A for the rest of the year. He’ll ride with teammates John Cowan and Chad Wells, who can still take big points in the next two stops.
This Sunday’s Crystal Cross will decide who still has hope for a top ten, and coming on the heels of Peak2Peak, it’ll be interesting to see who has a little something left for the cyclocross on Sunday. The course will be short, extremely demanding and should still be a bit soggy after a full week of rain in the forecast until race day. Registration is open here.
Points totals for each rider that have scored are below, in no particular order. The top three finishes from each race will count.
