‘Cross gets going in Michigan on September 6. You won’t want to miss it. Because if you do you’ll feel like an idiot.

No race means as much to its sport as the Alma GP of Cyclocross. Formerly named after and based in Ithaca, the short transfer north to Alma gives an already big race even more elbow room as it grows into a truly unmissable event. As cyclocross itself gains popularity in Michigan, much of the interest and experience hinges on Alma, which kicks off racing in early September each year. Every other ‘cross series benefits from a big turn out at the GP, and every racer has a darn fine time.

The move to Alma also ushers in a few new touches to the event, including a fat bike only race at 10am. That appeal should be enough to draw out those colored uncomfortable by skinnier tires, but should serve as a sort of gateway drug to the sport as well. Cyclocross, like cocaine, is a hell of a drug.

The Alma Brewing Company is another big draw, with packet pick-up on Friday, September 5 from 6-8pm, a great venue to swing through ahead of race day. Plus, racers will get $1 off pints when they show their race number on Saturday, so expect to swap some war stories post-race.

The race also has some very nice touches, like free custom water bottles for the first 200 registered riders to grab their numbers. There’s also some hip Velocity SS wheels for the winner of the singlespeed race that caps off the afternoon. But obviously the biggest draw is the announcer; Cody Sovis, that’s right, CODY EFFIN’ SOVIS, will be announcing much of the day. That’s a value of of $10 million for just the cost of registration.

There’s an awful lot of people that have already taken advantage of that bargain, and some heavy hitters, too. Kim Chapman, Rebecca Wissman, Brad White, Scott Hofner, Kelly Patterson, Shawn Davison and plenty of other fast guys and gals are already in, with a week left for people to get in early.

Registration closes August 31 at 11:59pm, but day of will be available. You can register here or head over to Alma GP’s website for more information.
