The first fantasy stage race of the year starts this Sunday for the “Race To The Sun”! 

Alberto Contador, Richie Porte and Marcel Kittel lead the way as some of the likely top picks of the race. The 2017 route is almost neatly divided in two, separated by a time trial that Tony Martin will win by 8 seconds. The opening three stages are lumpy but almost certainly going to end with bunch sprints, although Stage Two does have a Cat 2 climb in the final 30km.

After that time trial on Stage Four, Stage Five has a similar recipe as Stage Two, with a Cat 2 climb coming about as far out. As is often the case, weather could play a big part in all the stages, but with the fifth stage, winding through valley roads on the leeward side of the Vosges almost promises wet weather this time of year.

The final three stages are true mountain stages, including a trip up the famous Col d’Eze on the last day. The Col d’Eze is often home to a legendary time trial, something Richie Porte has made a habit of winning in recent years. Porte, Contador, and Alejandro Valverde are likely the big favorites, with the stars of the Abu Dhabi Tour, Rui Costa and Ilnur Zakarin, still flying slightly under the radar.
