Group Rides In Your Pocket: kolo t.c.’s New Slack Workspace

Never miss a ride. Well, you can miss a ride. But at least you’ll get asked to the dance.

We’ve been trying to figure out a way to organize group rides easier. We’ve been posting the big ones on our Strava Club for years, but we’ve found that it doesn’t offer a ton of flexibility. People aren’t constantly refreshing their app (well, we are, but not on the Club) nor does it provide a good place to add ideas about more than one ride in one place.

Enter Slack. We’ve created a workspace that let’s riders use channels to tune into the rides and races they care about, set notifications, and interact to coordinate more informal (think casual spandex) rides outside of the recurring weekly rides like TNR and SOL. It’s pretty easy to use, and it allows you to get simple notifications (or not!) of rides, bike stuff for sale, news, and other stuff from kolo t.c.

Once you’ve created an account, you can add, delete, mute, or get notifications from different channels. Want to know when the first SOL is? Join the #speedoflight channel. Is there TNR next week? Yes, but watch for the call for rain or cold by, you guessed it, joining that channel. You can set specific notifications for specific rides, or set your account to alert you for all the cycling chatter.

We’re getting into the THICK MEAT of spring, with the TNR already underway and the first Speed of Light on the far side of Mud, Sweat and Beers, May 9 at 5:30. The Giro Competition will kick things off for four weeks of fake racing action, followed by the traditional June Classics months, with weekly themes of cyclocross, fat bike, singlespeed, ladies, and more.

The workspace also has channels setup for you to sell your stuff to other kolo t.c. nerds, plus talk about pro racing and catch our latest blog posts.

To install Slack, just hit this link from your phone. Make sure you add yourself to all the channels you’re interested in, and set the notifications accordingly. Even without notifications on, you can always just open the open to see what’s new.

We’ll keep posting our weekly rides, fundraisers, and supported races on our Strava page, which you can join here. We’ll also keep posting stuff on IG (@kolotc) and Facebook…but not loads.
