2019 Speed of Light June Line-Up: Ladies’ Night, Fat Bikes, and More

We’ve got two more stages of the Giro Competition to knock out, but it’s never too early to look at the first real events of summer in the world of Speed of Light.

The Giro’s Third and Final stages will wrap up May, and we’re hitting June at full speed. First up, it’s a very special edition of Ladies’ Night. With Skirts in the Dirt registration opening that Thursday, it’s just too darn to convenient to host double points for all women finishers to kick off the WorldTour Classics season. Plus, we’re hoping to get one of you down to the race; every woman who submits a time on June 6’s Ladies’ Night will go in a drawing for a free entry to Skirts in the Dirt!

Skirts in the Dirt is a women-only mountain bike race that has gotten so many new riders involved in the sport. It’s a fundraiser for West Michigan Mountain Bike Alliance and a great way to experience Wahlfield Trail, no matter how serious of a racer you are. In fact, it’s geared to get newbies on the trail and veterans out just to have some fun. Jill Martindale and Julie Whalen, plus the whole Skirts team, have brought a whole new energy to West Michigan, and this event embodies everything good going on with bikes right now.

The next week is all about the teams. Team Time Trial Night makes its June debut, with the three fastest times from each local club added together. We’ll start all together, and your third rider across counts; do you stay together, mark moves, or go all-out and see how the chips land after?

June 14 will also be the first miniSOL/Junior SOL of the season, with Will Unger back as your captain, guide, and the voice of both events. Watch for more updates on this as we get closer, but the route remains the same as previous years.

June 20 is Fat Bike Night! We’re counting any tire over 3.8” (for all you original Pugsley owners) for double points. It’s a title John O’Hearn has proudly captured in years past, and in a fat bike town like Traverse City, it’s quite the feather to have in your cap.

Singlespeed Night caps off the four weeks of WorldTour events on June 27. One gear, any style, double points; it’s as simple as the drivetrain.

Lots of fun to come this summer, and remember, you can log a time at any point on Thursdays, so if you can’t make it at 6pm, just go shred a lap.
