It’s so early to call much, but Fat Chance! put a half dozen riders into a great position for the long haul to March 5.

We’re 25% through the 2016 Series, but already we’ve been treated to a sneak peak into the good and the great with three races left on the calendar. It’s a bit of a lull before the Vasa Fat Bike Race on February 13, so let’s fill it with wild and pointless speculation.

On the Men’s side, only Ryan Kennedy will be in position to make a run for it, with Jorden Wakeley, Matt Acker and Brian Geshel both expected to take their talents along the winding route of the rest of the Great Lakes Fat Bike Series. Indeed, Einstein Racing-Short’s Brewing is looking deep in both the Men’s and Women’s Open sides, with Kennedy no doubt buoyed by the likes of Jon Throop, Craig Fortuna and Wes Sovis, all three of whom were squarely in the top twenty on Saturday.

It’s an eerily similar portrait for their women’s team, with Liz Belt also fourth behind Danielle Musto, Katti Krikke and Chelsea Strate. That trio is expected to stay on the Great Lakes trail, with Belt sticking to local races the rest of the way. She’ll look to neo-amateurs Stephanie Baklarz, Janna Goethel and Amie Elvie to round out the Series podium, with a bit of luck.

Dawn Cluchey looks like gold in the Women’s Master’s, the title she won convincingly in 2015. She’s off to a great start ahead of Cindy Duby, while Birgit Yetter gives ER-SB another title contender for the long haul.

The Men’s Master’s always seems to be the most entertaining category by the last race or two, and with so many of the names on the start list likely to finish the whole series. Scott Diment took the win and did so in impressive fashion. Hagerty Cycling’s Robert Goepfrich has made no secret that he’d like to win the category and has to be content with a second place finish. Die-hard Series riders like Kevin Wright, Thomas Klaver, Keith Conway and Hal BeVier are still in the hunt, though they’ll need some big rides at Vasa to make up some ground.
