The 2017 WorldTour standings are up and it’s Dave Bucholtz in the lead after a big Giro for the singlespeeder.
Bucholtz took points from seventh on GC, plus full points in the Best Old Rider and Singlespeed classifications to leapfrog Giro winner John O’Hearn heading into Fat Bike Night. While he may be hard pressed to hold the WorldTour lead through June, a repeat performance at the Tour could see Bucholtz way, way up on the WorldTour by the season’s midway point, a goal he’ll be looking to check off the list of a solid season so far.
Marie Voss made the most of her women’s GC win and Hagerty’s Team win to take a full 33 points and move into third ahead of Giro runner-up and two-time WorldTour champion Cody Sovis. Behind Sovis is the rest of the kolo t.c. Pirate Armada, Dan Ellis and Wes Sovis.
Thursday’s Fat Bike Night will shake everything up, of course, with 20 points to the winner, -1 through the top twenty, with anyone riding a fat bike getting double points. It’s a gamble for many riders that are around the 10-15th places; go fat and double your pleasure, with the chance that even 2-3 spots lower and you may not get any points at all. It’s certainly an interesting dynamic, and one that literally roars through the woods at the race’s start, as 20+ riders on 4″ tires hit the Vasa CC Climb.
It’s also a dry run of sorts for the #YOUTHS with Norte and Hagerty Cycling leading miniSOL and Junior SOL rides, giving the youngsters a chance to make a final recon of the course before racing starts in earnest next week. Ryan Miller, Kyan Olshove, Will Unger and plenty of others have already been in the woods to see climbs, descents and best lines of the 2017 SOL route, so they should be getting in some miles Thursday night and feeling rather well prepared for the season to get underway.
Dave Bucholtz looks to defend the WorldTour Thursday at 6:45 from Bunker, with miniSOL and Junior SOL riders at Bunker no later than 6:18pm for a quick intro from Peter Worden and the adults.
