January is going to be fun. Really fun.
The weather has finally cooperated to give us a bit of winter just in time, and that’s making January into a prime month for riding. Remember a few years ago when there was an off season? You’d see everyone in March and be shocked at their pale, rotund faces and awkwardly try to hide the obvious strain on your spandex. Well, everyone is as fit as ever this time of year, and whether you’re out to crush skulls or have fun, there is almost certainly a ride for what you’re vibin’.
Maybe one of the most important events of the month is the NMMBA Annual Meeting, which balances the tedium (no, it’ll be fun, they promised) of a required member meet-up with two of life’s greatest joys; bikes and tacos. We should see over 100 bikes on hand for the 3pm ride, with three groups heading out at three different paces. Get a first-hand look at the WST from the groomer-dudes themselves. After, we’re having Red MEsa tacos before a few short talks about NMMBA plans for 2019 and beyond. If you care about the trails, our forests, and our events, you really need to keep tabs on all-things NMMBA.
After a fun ride, the gloves come off on January 20. Fat Chance!, one of the original fat bike races in the country, is back at Crystal Mountain for its eighth edition. Now presented by Iron Fish Distillery, it’s the first stop of the four-race Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series and one of the most spectator-friendly events on the calendar. Race Director Chris Remy has put a few sections of singletrack back into the race, reprising the original Fat Chance course, albeit without the road section.
The 45 and 90 minute races all start at noon, and the race devolves rather quickly into a party, often just about as soon as the gun goes off. It’s an event that lends itself almost perfectly to new riders, but still a tough early season challenge for more experienced fat bike racers. Registration is open, and we’re expecting to see plenty of folks get signed up for this over the next couple of weeks.
We’ll be at both events, so watch the site for photos, previews, and recaps as these dates fly by, and trust us, this month is going to be a blur.
